Tope Adewale — screenwriter and author, Gbagada, Lagos

I need a wall-mounted bookshelf that feels like it belongs in a writer's room — not a catalogue product. Something that holds 200+ books, has a section for display, and has the word SCRIPT visible somewhere in the design. I want the steel to do the work so the wood can breathe.

Steel structure, reclaimed wood shelves

Our Response

Tope’s brief was personal — the shelf had to carry her identity as well as her books. The request to have SCRIPT visible in the structure was the creative anchor.

The solution: a full-wall steel flat bar frame, 3600mm wide and 2400mm tall, designed so that the negative space between the structural members — when read from across the room — forms the letters S, C, R, I, P, T. The letterforms are not applied — they are the structural logic of the frame itself.

The shelves: reclaimed timber boards sourced from a demolished building in Surulere — each board unique, planed flat on the underside for stability, left in its reclaimed state on the face and edges.

The frame is wall-anchored at 16 points into structural masonry. The entire system carries an estimated 300kg load without deflection.

Delivery Story

Wall installation took a full day — 16 masonry anchors, all horizontal levels checked three times. When the last reclaimed board was placed and Tope stood at the opposite end of the room, she read the word SCRIPT across the frame and laughed. Books were placed that same afternoon. Two weeks later she sent us a photograph of the shelf fully loaded — 240 books, screenplays stacked at the top, the word still legible through the spines.
